More than meets the eye at Six Acres

Stephanie Johnstone

5 minute read

Forget any notion you may have of a hotel restaurant; Six Acres at The Rydges breaks that stereotype. Amongst the perfectly styled, fresh décor, you will find a menu that delivers the simple classics done exceptionally well.

You'll find Six Acres at The Rydges Fortitude Valley. The hotel opened in April 2016 and has an important tie with regional Queensland. The Rydges is located adjacent to the Showgrounds, the home of Queensland’s beloved ‘Ekka’. If the Ekka is when the country comes to town, then The Rydges Fortitude Valley is where the country stays.

So, it was important that the hotel’s restaurant embodied ‘regional Queensland’s home in the city'.  And so, the clever team at Six Acres designed a menu based on a paddock to plate philosophy. This is where you’ll find a simple, yet well-executed menu offering free-range roasted meats, beautifully presented desserts and a well-curated wine list.

Country Style

Don’t expect any twee country pine furniture here. The décor is fresh, unique and offers plenty of space, ambient lighting. Sophisticated touches include the herb cart, stylish pendant lights and the quirky backlit wall of commemorative plates.

Six Acres Night

Choose a table inside and enjoy the fresh, modern interior or take a seat on the expansive outdoor terrace and enjoy the ‘country comes to the city’ experience.

What’s on the menu?

Six Acres is championing the paddock to plate philosophy in the heart of the valley. Modern Australian cuisine is kept simple and fresh, allowing the flavours of the seasonal produce to shine through.

The starter and main meals reflect the depth of knowledge of the kitchen team and the extensive side dish menu will leave you struggling to pick just one.

To kick things off, you may be tempted by oysters, an antipasto plate or scallops. Main dishes include modern favourites like lamb, market fish of the day, free-range chicken and beef cheeks. Plenty to keep the hungriest of cowboys and cowgirls satisfied.

But the star of the Six Acres show is what’s cooked on the grill. The steaks at Six Acres are directly sourced from the best suppliers in Gympie and the Darling Downs. Choose a T-Bone, Scotch Fillet, Sirloin on the Bone or Black Angus Eye Fillet and you’re guaranteed to get a meal cooked to perfection. Sauce lovers will delight at the extensive selection that includes a Shiraz-Infused Red Wine Jus, Creamy Forest Mushroom, Pink Peppercorn, Horseradish Crème Fraiche, House Made Tomato Chutney or Aromatic Herb Butter.

Desserts at Six Acres are almost as good as the steaks. So we recommend you leave plenty of room. The desserts change regularly, but you can expect delights such as a Lindt White Chocolate Cheesecake with fresh berries and mini macarons, a Classic Tiramisu Sponge or Cheese Board Selection.

Meet at The Paddock Bar

The Paddock Bar is the perfect place to meet after a big day in the country or the city. The stunning bar offers panoramic views onto the RNA Showgrounds and the Royal International Exhibition Centre and is the perfect place to soak in all the atmosphere of Fortitude Valley.  Enjoy a craft beer, signature cocktail or fine wine beneath the shade of the stunning fig tree.

Six Acres is open every day for breakfast and dinner.
