An entire street in Chippendale devoted to eating, drinking and entertainment, Kensington Street is the must-visit home to some of Sydney's best eateries, galleries and hospitality offerings. Since opening in 2015, Kensington Street has become one of the city's hottest precincts; and of course, First Table makes many of these restaurants easy to discover.
Cartel
Cuisine and décor full of fun, colour and BIG flavours, Cartel pays homage to the cuisine of Latin America. As well as incredible food, Cartel is home to incredible cocktail creations, tequila and mezca.
But first, let's explore the food menu. Designed to be shared, fill your table with tapas - crunchy cauliflower bites, guacamole and corn chips, or tacos loaded with chicken, beans, salsa, pulled pork or cauliflower. Larger bites feature the loaded vege burrito or the spicy Mexican bowl, and seafood lovers will drool over the salmon with red chilli, or Peruvian king fish with tiger milk.
Be sure to visit the bar, for margaritas, cocktails and sangria; life is after all better with tequila.
Olio Kensington Street
Olio has described Sicilian cuisine as the cultural melting pot of influences from Greece to France, Spain to the Middle East. Sicilian-born award-winning chef, Lino Sauro, has created an unforgettable dining experience on the second floor of the beautifully restored ‘The Old Rum Store’.
Chef Lino will transport you to his hometown, with all dishes made with Olive Oil from his family farm in Sicily. Start your meal with Hokkaido scallop confit with celeriac cream, pickled celery and liquorice. What else is next but pasta! Try the signature Sardinian pasta with spanner crab, spicy pork nduja, or the pulled Wagyu beef brisket ragu and dried ricotta.
Mains include pulled Green Bay lobster, chargrilled lamb rump steak or the 24-hour slow-cooked Kurobuta pork neck “Stimpirata” style. Cheers to the cuisine you never knew you needed in your life!
Eastside Bar & Grill
Located on the first floor of ‘The Old Rum Store’ on Kensington Street, Eastside Bar and Grill pays homage to New York’s meatpacking district. Housed in a heritage-listed warehouse, you’ll feel like you’ve travelled to the Big Apple without leaving Sydney.
On the menu are the finest cuts of meat that have been dry-aged in-house and prepared on the beautiful Parrilla custom-built wood-fire grill. Serious meat lovers, you’ll be spoiled for choice with T-bone, rib-eye, tomahawk, tenderloin, scotch fillet, sirloin…the list goes on.
Seafood lovers, you can indulge in oysters, sashimi, Moreton Bay prawns, grilled octopus, Murray cod and seafood chowder. Finish up with a slice of New York cheesecake or Spanish cheese and roll yourself out the door.
Gavroche
Romantic French cuisine in an equally romantic atmosphere, Gavroche is your taste of France in the heart of Kensington Street. French favourites we all love - duck liver parfait, beef tartare and escargot with garlic butter can be paired with duck leg confit, cote de boeuf or sovereign lamb loin backstrap for the ultimate French affair.
For dessert, it has to be crème brûlée or crepes with orange sauce flambéed with Grand Marnier. And finish with a cognac or French and Australian wines, bon appétit!
