Thanks to its proximity to the big blue, Sydney has become known for its quality, sustainable and utterly delicious seafood.

If you have a crush on crustaceans and a fancy for fish, check out our top First Table picks for seafood in Sydney.

Chiosco by Ormeggio

Sydney seafood favourites

BYO and barefoot-friendly, Chiosco is a laid-back restaurant right on the waterfront. With leagues of ocean before you, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re here to catch your own dinner.

Thankfully, the Chiosco team do all the hard work so all you need to do is relax with your chosen tipple and enjoy the view.

Created by the team behind renowned Italian trattoria Ormeggio, Chiosco serves up seafood with a distinct Italian flavour.

The menu is regularly altered to reflect the best of the catch and seasonal vegetables. Past favourites include chargrilled octopus tentacle and trout fillet with capers and olives, but it’s best to pop in to find out what’s on tonight’s menu.

Kobe Jones

Seafood in downtown Sydney

You can’t write about seafood in Sydney without mentioning a Japanese style restaurant and Kobe Jones is one of our go-to favourites.

Kobe Jones is guided by the philosophy that food should be easy to eat and always shared with friends and family.

Making the most of the ocean’s bounty, dishes are simply prepared using traditional Japanese methods to bring out the natural flavours of the fish. There’s something to suit every palate, from seafood poke to black kingfish and scented smoking nigiri.

Try it for yourself.

Where: 29 Lime Street, King Street Wharf

Open: Mon-Sun: 11:00 am - 11:00 pm

Plonk

Seafood by the beach Sydney

Overlooking the beautiful Middle Harbour with a side serving of sandy beach, Plonk offers a contemporary waterside dining experience. Ideal for families, bring your children and your dog and let them play on the beach while you relax with a glass of wine after dinner.

This hidden gem has a great atmosphere, funky nautical décor and a menu with plenty to appease hungry kids and grown-ups.

The delectable seafood platter for two should cater for all your seafood cravings, but there’s deep-fried flathead, market fish, steak and more if you don’t like sharing delicious food.

Mekong

Vietnamese food in Sydney

Imagine yourself in a barge on the Mekong River in this Vietnamese restaurant by Chef Tiw Rakarin, formerly of Mama’s Buoi (Surry Hills) and Alphabet St (Cronulla).

Using recipes passed down through generations, you’ll find squid ink dumplings, stir-fry pipi and steamed barramundi with Thai green chilli on the menu. Exotic flavours and fragrances like coconut, star anise and lemongrass are mainstays here.

If you’re looking for seafood with colour, vibrancy and Asian-fusion flavours, Mekong is your desintation.
