A tapas bar in Newtown that reverberates with lively Spanish hospitality, Cocina Del Barrio is keeping diners on their toes with an ever-changing menu and some of the finest wine selections in the area.
For anyone who has been to Spain, they'll know that the concept of 'family' extends to the person you met on the street just 5 minutes ago. So, it goes without saying that everyone who walks through Cocina's doors is one of the crew. Like a family home, the tapas bar is familiar and cosy, capturing that Mediterranean magic with beautiful tiles lining the bar and exposed kitchen and pairing them with informal bistro seating inside and outside and heaps of familial memorabilia. So, settle down with your first glass of vino or cerveza fria and prepare for a Spanish feast that is befitting of any family supper.
One of the things that diners love most about Cocina is its menu. Seeing as it changes almost weekly, they're keeping it nice and simple with a blackboard and cold selection on the bar. Whilst there's no telling what might be on offer the evening of your visit, here's a taste of what can come. The sample menu is enough to get your mouth watering with patatas bravas [fried potatoes with paprika aioli], handmade meatballs in a rich tomato sauce and smoky chorizo slow-cooked in wine.
They're no strangers to seafood either, with alternating special dishes on offer. Nothing says a Spanish summer quite like a helping of brilliantly yellow paella brimming with fresh seafood [also offering a vegetarian option] or a seafood cazuela [fresh seafood in a tomato salsa]. Mop up all the good bits with some crusty bread and wash it down with another glass of Spanish red or maybe sangria.
If you prefer just coming in for a drink be greeted, as is the Spanish way, with complimentary pinchos with your alcoholic beverage. Nothing left to say but buen apetito!
